Sand Springs baseball penalized, but season goes on

Sand Springs? baseball season will go on, but without 20-year veteran head coach Bill Hutson in the dugout.

Hutson will be suspended throughout the playoffs and the Sandites forfeited the right to host a 6A regional tournament.

They?ve also forfeited Saturday?s regular-season final game against Jenks as part of the self-imposed penalties suggested by the school in its appeal to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for playing too many games.

The OSSAA ruled Friday, essentially reducing the Sandites? status from ?probation? to ?warning,? which allows them to participate in the postseason playoffs.

Without that ruling, what is believed to be the best season in school season would have been over. The third-ranked Sandites are 30-4 and lead District 6A-4. Hutson said the 30 wins are believed to be a school record.

Hutson admitted to making an ?honest mistake? in scheduling the Sandites to play 23 regular-season games - one more than allowed by the OSSAA. Teams may also play in three tournaments.

Hutson said he scheduled a March 6 district doubleheader at U.S. Grant, but wrote it down as a single game and apparently miscounted later.

?It was a clerical error on my part, but it wasn?t something I did to give us a competitive advantage,? he said.

By forfeiting Saturday?s game, the Sandites will fall within the legal limit. But they will run afoul of another OSSAA provision against canceling district games.

That calls for immediate probation, ending a school?s eligibility for postseason play. Sandite officials have been scrambling to restore the team?s eligibility since Wednesday when they discovered the error and self-reported their situation.

?It?s tough situation for everyone, but rules are rules, and we?re thankful that our kids will have a chance to play in the playoffs,? Sandite school superintendent Lloyd Snow said.

Snow said in a printed release: ?Coach Hutson is an honest, lifelong, dedicated teacher-coach that feels terrible about the situation. Honesty, integrity and transparency are core values in our district. We sincerely apologize for this infraction and embarrassment to our students, parents and community.?

Hutson?s suspension is effective immediately, and carries over to the first five games of next season. Sandite assistants Scott Watkins and Brad Ehmke were to lead the team in Friday?s game at Jenks.
